It is first best to get to Ocosingo and find a place to stay for the night. To get to Ocosingo you follow highway 199 south from Palenque or north from San Cristobal de Las Casas. There is only one road so you cannot miss it. The road winds through the mountains and can be very dangerous. It is recommended to take a bus as the drivers know the route and if your vehicle brakes down you are not alone. From Ocosingo you can take a taxi which is not that expensive or you can take the collectevo opposite the Tianguis Campesino. To return to Ocosingo from Tonina you must wait near the entrance for a collectevo, which will drop you off at the main market in Ocosingo. You will need to take a taxi from there to your hotel or the bus station. There are always taxis present. If you stay at Rancho Esmeralda you can walk to the ruins. You have to take a taxi to Esmeralda's and arrange a ride to the bus station. |
