INCIDENTS OF TRAVEL IN THE INTERZONEGREEN EGGS AND HAM v1.1aThis ceremony was conducted by the elder Shaman Victorio Vazquez Garcia in San Cristobal. The ceremony took place in a Maya Church. The room was around 20 ft. by 15 ft. It was filled with large statues of Christian Saints who double as Mayan Saints. Also present were numerous Mayan talismanic objects like the Maya Cross, Pepsi, flowers and leaves. The room was dimly lit and had a magical feeling to it. The Shaman Victorio Vazquez Garcia was a small sturdy man. He had a jovial continence about him. He was very kind to me. The fact I was an outsider and a cow appeared to be neither here nor there to him. Before I was to perform my ceremony an elderly lady was to go first. This was a bonus because I was now able to witness the ceremony before I did mine. This was very interesting because during the woman's ceremony I witnessed the Shaman do some unusual things. At certain points in the ceremony he would yawn and act uninterested or look at his watch. At first I suspected he was simply board but I was surprised when at the same times in my ceremony he yawned looked uninterested and looked at his watch. It was in fact a part of the ceremony. His ceremony was choreographed with exact precision. To perform this ceremony I was required to bring an egg, some flowers of the Nonnececita forest and 36 white candles. Twelve small candles, twelve medium candles and twelve large candles. The ceremony began by me kneeling on the floor in front of a statue of Saint San Juan. I was instructed to make three rows of candles in front of me [between the statue] and me. I lit a candle and dripped wax on the cement floor then stuck a candle in the cooling wax to hold it upright. I made one row of small candles, and then one row of medium candles then one row of large candles. The small candles were the first row closest to Saint San Juan. The Shaman Victorio began his song. He sang in Mayan, I do not know what dialect. Part ways into the song I was instructed to light all the candles. He continued singing, yawned, looked board then asked me my name. Of course I did not understand what he had said to me but a young Mayan man was on top of the situation and sprung out from an open door to tell me what to do. So I said my name, "Cattle.Ken". Then he asked me where I came from, I replied. Then Victorio picked up the flowers that were sitting on the floor next to me. He then proceeded to rub the main statue. He did this with exhibited enthusiasm, it was very dramatic. Then he went around the room and rubbed the flowers all over each statue with equal enthusiasm. He then went back to some of the statues, not all, and rubbed them again all the while singing his song loudly. This lasted for around half an hour. During this period I kneeled motionless behind my candles watching. I was intrigued by the emotion the Shaman put into the ceremony. He did not simply sing his song to the statues but addressed them as if they were living entities, there in the room with us. Although I could not understand a word he said it looked to me like he was pleading with the statues, begging them for something on my behalf. Even though I am sure he has conducted this specific ceremony countless times before he expressed just as keen an interest in my ceremony as he did the lady before me and most likely everyone else he has conducted the ceremony for. I thought he was extremely professional about his work and you could tell he took it all very seriously. After he had rubbed all the statues he went behind me and hit me on the top of my head with the flowers. Then he quickly moved to the Saint San Juan statue and rubbed the flowers on the statue's shoulders. He chanted his song to the statue while rubbing it with the flowers. Then quickly back to me he gently rubbed the flowers all over my body then back to the statue again. By this time the candles were going out one by one, each one melting away to nothing but a small pile of wax. At the moment the last candle burnt out he stopped, pulled his pants up a bit and slowly walked over to a little cabinet in the wall. He opened the cabinet door and pulled out a bottle of water and a glass. He then knelt on the floor beside me, poured water into the glass, took the egg and cracked it on the edge of the glass. He dumped the contents of the egg into the glass then placed the egg-shells in the flowers, rapped them into a little bundle then threw the bundle into a garbage can in the corner of the room. Looking into the glass he sighed and went hmmm. He then pointed to it and started talking to me in Spanish. However I do not understand Spanish so I was clueless. So I called for my young Mayan friend to write down in my book what Victorio had said. This is the Spanish: [NOTE: The Shaman said a lot more than what was written down. I was told that what was written down was the summery of what the Shaman had said.] Lo que salio en el huevo de la limpia que te hicieron fue que tenial envidia, espanto que te sueedio hace tiempo. NOTES: This ceremony was a healing ceremony. I was told that the ceremony was not to facilitate a healing of the physical body but a healing of my "soul". |
