The village of San Lorenzo Zinacantan lays 11km from San Cristobal. You take the same road to Zinacantan as you do to get to Chamula. The huipil for Zinacantan is bright red with lots of flowers. This village is known for its pottery. Surrounded by miles of lush farmland as you enter any part of the village you will likely see various apparatuses for making pottery. Many people do not use kilns and instead build large fires. Houses will have the clay, wood, paint and other tools associated with making any number of different ceramic creation. There is a small main plaza and church. To get there you need to take a collectivo. There are many smaller villages outside of San Cristobal and Tuxtla. You drive through them on your way to a larger village like Chamula. At the larger villages the road generally ends and you reach the next village on foot via mountain paths.
Tuxtla Gutierrez became the state capital of Chiapas in 1892. It is located in the west side of Chiapas at an elevation of 532 m. Temperature is hot and humid during the day and cool at night. You can fly into Tuxtla from Mexico City and Cancun.
