Palenque Ruins has a museum located on the highway just west of the exit at the restaurant. This museum is presently under renovation. It did however contain some amazing pottery. Palenque Ruins Museum is presently under renovations and closed to the public. There is also a very small museum in Palenque city, which deals with local history. It is located at the southwest corner of the main plaza and is free.
There is a good museum at Tonina ruins. It is located right at the entrance. This is also where you wait for the collectivo. You can buy books and CDs here but everything is in Spanish. You cannot buy water or anything to eat here. There are washrooms and armed personal on site.
There is the small Museo Arqueologico de Comitan which contains a number of interesting artifacts dating back 700 BC. Open 10:00 - 5:00 Tuesday - Sunday Located at the Main Plaza.
Casa Museo Dr Belisario Dominguez is a small museum, which used to be a house. It is more for local history and everything is in Spanish. Open 10:00 am - 6:00 PM Tuesday - Saturday and on Sunday 9:00 am - 12:00. Located at: Avienida Central Sur 35 [close to Main Plaza]
Museo Arqueologico del Soconusco is a small museum displaying local finds. Everything is in Spanish. It is open 11 am to 6 PM every day except Mondays. Located at the main plaza, which is called Parque Hidalgo.
Contains Mayan artifact as well as colonial history. Open 9 am to 4 PM every day except Mondays. Located at Parque Madero which is on 11a Calle Ote.
San Cristobal las Casas has a museum, which is, located downtown at the main market next to the church. It opens at 10:00 every morning. There is also a small weaving museum called Sna Jolobil right next to the main museum where you can see and purchase a large number of huipiles and other woven items by local women.
Chiapas is renown for its coffee and there is of course a museum just for coffee. Located at MA Flores 10.
Na Bolom is a house that was occupied by a Swiss couple who moved to the Chiapas in the 50s after becoming interested in all things Mayan. The couple founded an organization that helped to promote the rights of the Indians but since their deaths, their organization has faltered. The house is filled with all kinds of interesting things. Located at Guerrero 33, six blocks north of Real de Guadalupe.
There is a collection of amber and amber jewelry in San Cristobal. It is located next to the Iglesia de La Merced off of Diego de Maziegos at 12 de Septiembre.
