Old Don Antonio tells a story that the eldest of the elders in his community once told him. He says once upon a time there was a very beautiful fish who lived in the river. The lion saw the fish and had a sudden craving for it. But when the lion asked the opossum for advice, who told him:

"It's very simple. Fish can't live out of water. All you have to do is drink all the water out of the river. The fish will be left high and dry and then you can catch him and eat him."

The lion was very pleased with the opossum's advice and rewarded him with a position in his kingdom. The lion went to the edge of the river and began to drink. He died when all the water burst him into pieces. The opossum became unemployed.

TAXI

You can be in the middle of nowhere on a deserted road miles from anything and a taxi will drive by. This is the astonishing thing about taxis in Chiapas, they are everywhere. The majority of taxis are in good shape as well and the drivers are very cautious with their cars.

Mexican taxi drivers belong to a secret organization. Each branch of the organization has a different colour for their cars. They all however follow the same code of conduct.

Mexican taxi drivers are:

    Polite
    Helpful
    Courteous
    Safe drivers
    Honest
    Friendly

RATES

Rates vary from city to city. The driver will calculate the cost in his head after the trip however the majority of rides cost the same. You can deal with the driver for a rate before you go if you know what the best rate for the trip is.

In deserted locations some drivers may attempt to take advantage of you.

From the ADO bus station in Palenque to Mayabel costs 30 pesos. The collectivo costs 7 pesos.

GRATUITIES

A general tip of 10 pesos per ride or more if it is a long trip is the rule of thumb. Offer the driver a cigarette if you smoke and offer to buy him a pop on a long journey or if you are going to ask him to wait for you if you are visiting something.

WHEN TO TAKE A TAXI

If you are new to Chiapas then you may want to use taxis until you figure out how the collectivo system works. In many instances you will have to take a taxi or find a car to drive you somewhere.

Remote villages will have taxis to bring you back from where ever you go. You might have to wait sometimes, but you will get a taxi from any village anywhere in the Chiapas, if there is a road into the village.

To visit many villages you can take a bus however you are restricted to a schedual. In some instances you can take a bus then use a taxi at an intersection out in the country to go in a different direction.

You have to be prepared to use a combination of travel methods to get where you wish to go if you are not traveling around on a tour bus or your own vehicle.

If you do not speak Spanish then make sure that you have every detail of your days journey worked out with somebody before you go and write everything down on paper so you can show bus drivers and taxi drivers where you are trying to go.

WAITING TAXIS & PICK/UPS

There is a scam the taxi drivers use in Egypt where they will drive you to a location then sit there all day waiting for you. Obviously a miscommunication which you must pay for. Mexican taxi drivers do NOT pull this scam. Instead they will quote you a price up-front if you wish them to stay or return at a designated time. The cost is usually reasonable.

I scatter flowers of war,
I of the smiling face
For I come with war.
I am the quetzal and
I come flying.
Through strait ways,
I come with war.
I am the beautiful
black bird with
the red neck,
I come flying: I come
to turn into a flower,
I, into the
bloodstained rabbit.
Look at me,
I'm serious now;
gird your sides.
I, whose eyes wink,
who goes smiling.
I come from within
the flowered courtyard.
Look at me, I mean it;
gird your sides.
I'm going to turn into a
flower,
I, into the bloodstained
rabbit.
