Old Don Antonio tells a story that the eldest of the elders in his community once told him. He says once upon a time there was a very beautiful fish who lived in the river. The lion saw the fish and had a sudden craving for it. But when the lion asked the opossum for advice, who told him:

"It's very simple. Fish can't live out of water. All you have to do is drink all the water out of the river. The fish will be left high and dry and then you can catch him and eat him."

The lion was very pleased with the opossum's advice and rewarded him with a position in his kingdom. The lion went to the edge of the river and began to drink. He died when all the water burst him into pieces. The opossum became unemployed.

DRIVING REGULATIONS

Driving regulations in Mexico are pretty much the same as they are in Canada or the U.S. so they are probably close to the regulations from where you reside. You obviously need a driver's license to drive a vehicle in Mexico and beyond that use common sense.

SEAT BELT LAW
The driver of a vehicle must wear a seatbelt. Passengers are not required to.

NO HELMET LAW
There is no politician's wife trying to score points with a helmet law in Mexico. This would definitely be counter productive for a politician thus there is no helmet law.

SPEEDING
Enforced [main highways near Cancun, Merida mostly].

PARKING
Enforced. Do NOT park illegially in Progresso, Merida, Chetumal, Tulum, Playa del Carmen and Izmal.

NOTE: Sometimes an officer will remove the license plates from an illegally parked vehicle. This means getting them back from the police. This costs money and is time consuming. If you drive the vehicle without plates and get busted you will compound the problem and pay a higher fine.

LIGHTS ON DURING DAY
You do not have to drive with your lights on during daylight hours.

OPEN VEHICLES
You may travel in an open vehicle [back of pickup truck].

ALCOHOL IN VEHICLES
Passengers can drink alcohol however the driver of a vehicle is prohibited from drinking alcohol while driving a vehicle on public roads.

DRUNK DRIVING
Drunk driving is punishable and if caught YOU WILL end up in a Mexican jail for an indeterminate period of time until you have sorted your mess out. Good luck you will need it.

I scatter flowers of war,
I of the smiling face
For I come with war.
I am the quetzal and
I come flying.
Through strait ways,
I come with war.
I am the beautiful
black bird with
the red neck,
I come flying: I come
to turn into a flower,
I, into the
bloodstained rabbit.
Look at me,
I'm serious now;
gird your sides.
I, whose eyes wink,
who goes smiling.
I come from within
the flowered courtyard.
Look at me, I mean it;
gird your sides.
I'm going to turn into a
flower,
I, into the bloodstained
rabbit.
